CBD is a non-psychoactive compound derived from the hemp plant. It works with the body’s endocannabinoid system by interacting with the cannabinoid receptors located throughout the body and brain. These receptors assist with regulating a range of different bodily functions, like sleep, metabolic and cardiovascular health, immunity, mood, and the regulation of hormones. CBD has been used for thousands of years but has only recently made it into the wellness spotlight. Before 2018, researchers weren’t able to fully investigate how CBD works with the human body, as it was classified under the Controlled Substances Act. In 2018, hemp was reclassified from a Schedule 1 substance to an agricultural commodity. Since then, a tremendous amount of research is being conducted, with promising anecdotal and scientific research pointing to CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties and potential to relieve chronic pain.
